Mayor Frank F. Fasi created a free event that included a lighted tree on the main lawn, a decorated tree display in the courtyard, a holiday concert, and displays of light on the trees and buildings from downtown to the civic center. The first 50-foot Norfolk Pine was decorated with wooden white doves, gold balls and illuminated by floodlights. The official tree lighting ceremony was held on December 12, 1985.
Now celebrating its 41st year, Honolulu City Lights continues to shine bright as one of Oʻahu’s most treasured holiday traditions. This year, we are excited to welcome a new partnership with Show Aloha Land, extending the ever-so-loved holiday celebration to include Thomas Square — creating two magical locations for families to enjoy the sights, sounds, and spirit of the season together.
Honolulu City Lights is presented by the City and County of Honolulu, the Friends of Honolulu City Lights and Show Aloha Land.
